The film doesnвЂ™t even sermonize the terrorists in any way вЂ“ all of these are aims a story like this often lets its narrative gravitate towards, and most of these often become the trap such stories fall into. Neerja, much to my relief, never chose the path of exploring the political undertones of the terrorist hijacking that is at its centre, steering clear of any examination of the global or even south Asian geopolitical scenario of the time. Telling the true story of Neerja Bhanot, the Pan Am purser who saved the lives of 359 passengers after a plane hijacking at Karachi in 1986 by a Palestinian terrorist group, the movie overcame many inhibitions that I feel trouble Bollywood, and gave me the kind of extremely well-directed, and appropriately but not overly sentimental story I love to watch. I say good fortune also because this was a brilliant film, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I say good fortune, because the film opened nearly a month ago, and if I miss a Bollywood movie while itвЂ™s still in theatres, I miss it forever as I find it hard to care enough (with good reason too, but I suppose there will be occasion another time to rant about the various ills that plague the Indian film industry). I had the good fortune of watching Neerja yesterday.
